Monumental Damage

Description

"Monumental Damage" is a trope (commonly used in - what else - disaster movies) that basically says that whenever you're seeing a lot of destruction, you can bet your ass there will be a shot of a famous landmark getting crushed, too. This is so that people all over the world watching the movie can recognize the places being destroyed. It makes a little sense with the ape armies, and maybe even with the aliens, but c'mon: do you really think a natural disaster could aim at the Eiffel Tower? Read more about it here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Used in "Cloverfield", "Planet of the Apes" (one of the most iconic examples), a lot of Roland Emmerich movies, "Pacific Rim", and others. But without doubt the best was in the Futurama episode "When Aliens Attack". (Words can't do it justice, so just go watch it!)

If aliens did it, they have been watching our TV shows and listening to our music for decades. That would tell them where to strike and who to kill.
